Jim Johnson

We are sad to share this news with you.  Our teacher, Jim Johnson, lost his battle with cancer and passed away yesterday morning.

Jim was a kind and gentle soul who cared extensively about his students.  He took great pleasure in watching them develop their musical skills under his guidance and told us, just two weeks ago, that they were an important part of his legacy.  Jim has been with us almost 10 years.  He will be sadly missed.

Matt first stepped onto our Open Mic stage to perform at age 14.  Little did we know then that he would become the incredible talent he is today and a guitar teacher here at Rick's.

His passionate pursuit of creating great music has paid off in spades as he's one of the most active working young artists performing on the regional circuit.  His songwriting received recognition early on, when he won the Crowd Pleaser Award and came in second place in the youth division at the Boston Folk Festival in 2008.  He's been writing ever since, but perfectionist that he is, his long-awaited debut CD, "Don't Turn Around" was recorded at Dirt Floor Recording Studio in Connecticut on some great vintage analogue gear.  Matt would love to tell you all about it.

He's quick to confess that he's an analogue guy in a digital world and proud of it.

Matt is a devoted student of music history both at Northeastern University and on his own time, collecting and studying the folk music styles of the past, an old soul filled with talent absorbed from immersing himself (since the womb) in the great music of folk legends Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Johnny Cash and Tom Petty. His passion for traditional country, acoustic blues and early rock and roll is engaged into his own original work. Matt has opened shows for well known local and national musicians such as John Flynn, Michael Troy, Rick Fetters, Don White and Kevin So.  This show, however, is all Matt!
