Stolen Gear...Oh No! It could happen to you.

STOLEN GEAR..Oh No!
No one likes to think about their precious music gear getting stolen but it happens. We'd like to offer some advice that will aid in recovery if this happens to you. It's easy and most people don't even think about it...

Keep a Gear File:  In it, put good pictures and on the back, record the year, Make, model & serial number of each item. The SERIAL NUMBER is the most important piece of information! (Without the serial number, Police will ask you if it has any identifying marks or special components in it.) Throw your purchase receipt into the file and you'll know just where to find it if you need a warranty repair.

We hope theft never happens to you, but if it does, speed is critical for a better chance of recovery. Having this file at your fingertips will be your biggest asset.

Sweet Babylon -10/25/12 Open Mic Feature

Our next Feature puts the ssss-punk in October!  Sweet Babylon is a ska / reggae / punk rock band so well received by our Open Mic crowd that we wanted to hear more of them.

The Group was formed in late 2011 by three friends from the Fall River, Mass area looking to bring back the ska and reggae sound from their generation (which was the 90's) to the new generation of Justin Beiber fans. "I can only compare us as a Blink-182 / Sublime .. love child,” says Kyle Platt, lead singer of the Group.

Sweet Babylon has  written tons of original music and also cover a lot of great music from many artists like Sublime to Kid Cudi.

Kyle Platt is the lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist of the group, with his smooth singing and wise cracking jokes he makes sure that every song turns into a party! Next on the roster is Izzy Star! He is the bassist and background vocalist in the group. With his shag-a-delic bass grooves and great harmonies he is capable of making any person shake their "toocus." Last, but definitely not least, is Brandon Carreiro on drums. His beats are able to fill up any music lover’s stomach. (Yes, that was beat reference to food...) All together they form the perfect little girl known as "Sweet Babylon!”

Peter Zurblis -Open Mic Feature 9/20/12

Peter Zurblis grew up immersed in the folk and rock music of the sixties and seventies and beyond. He has developed a passion for guitar and vocal interpretations of this deep pool of influence. Peter’s inspirations include, but are not limited to, Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Neil Young, The Band, and John Prine along with contemporaries like Mark Errelli, Laurie McKenna, and Richard Shindell.

Self taught on the guitar, Peter focuses primarily on folk and some rock music. He uses his voice and the harmonica for accompaniment. Peter has attended WUMB’s Summer Acoustic Music Week in New Hampshire which has allowed him to play with some of the nation’s best musicians.

Peter loves playing ‘around the campfire’, at gigs, for friends and family, house parties, and open mikes, especially the Rick’s Music World family. His main goal though is to just have fun and bring enjoyment to his audiences.

Our Thursday night Open Mic held in our Cafe is our most important community service effort, providing a casual, family-friendly performance venue for the members of our musical community of students, customers and visiting local/regional/national/international performers from beginners, and semi-pro to pro. Celebrating 7 years of Open Mic!

 Rick's Open Mic

July 20, 2005 - July 19, 2012

Open Mic Night at Rick's is your chance to shine and it's our commitment to serve our community.

What began as an effort to offer a safe and welcoming place to play for our students and customers has evolved into so much more as word spread of the great vibe at Rick's Open Mic, drawing performers from all over!

Every Thursday night the lights go down in the Cafe at Rick's Music World and the Stage lights come on, spotlighting local, regional and occasionally national and international talent. Talent abounds! But it's not just the talent that has made ours one of the most popular Open Mic's in the region.

It's the generousity of spirit from the Open Mic Community at each event...the audience and performers who in turn appreciate and support each other, and those who have so generously volunteered their time and energy to produce the events.  Like Tom Irving who tirelessly helps host, co-host, stage set up, Cafe sets up/breaks down...you name it, Tom's done it!!   Chris Zarlenga who stays long after his work day is over to help out, break down, take out trash...whatever is needed.  Jaimee Brown (and in the past many others!) who volunteers in our Cafe plus Steve DiPersio, Andy Daigle and Rick Fetters who've filled in on the sound board and Zak Jacobson who pitch hits whenever he's needed.  And the many people who help clean up and break down at the end of the night, like our friend John Spalding who we all miss so much.

In the same spirit, Rick and Robin donate all their time and energy to the cause. The $3 Admission is used to support the Open Mic Program and help fund the Rick's Music Scholarship Fund, which provides financial assistance to families for music lessons.  Their commitment to serve our community is well known.
Creativity breeds among creative people in such an environment.  The Rick's Stage has given birth to many original songs, and many a songwriter and musician has inspired others or began a collaborative evolution at Rick's on a Thursday night!

We're so lucky to be in the business of music. To see first-hand the power it has to transform our spirit by giving someone an energetic boost at just the right time, by inspiring a contemplative moment or resurrecting a special memory and by providing a much needed peaceful escape from our hectic lives.

At Open Mic we see it bring all kinds of people together, whether its to appreciate a shared song, recognize a person's effort or absorb the encouragement of others so freely given. We see the many brand new friendships bonded here. We see the challenges and laughter exchanged at each impromptu collaboration. The vibe at Open Mic seems to bring out the best in everyone. It's like music therapy. Actually a few people have told us that. If we could duplicate our Open Mic around the world, We're pretty sure the world would be a safer and happier place.

Here's to another 7 years!!

 Michael Troy - BIO
Michael Troy was born and raised in the rough-and-tumble mill town of Fall River, Mass. In many ways, his life reflects the lives of the hard-working common folk who populate this part of New England. Having spent parts of his own life as a mill worker, fisherman, laborer and carpenter, and most of his adult years as a husband and father, Michael has traveled many paths, and the experience and wisdom he's gleaned along the way echoes through his music.

A magical storyteller with a gift for melody, a deep rich voice, excellent finger-pickin' skills and the ability to compose outstanding stanzas of substance, Michael's plaintive ballads speak of the hills and mills of Fall River and of childhood dreams not quite forgotten in the adult quest to make an honest living.

Michael has won many awards for his music winning the 2004 Boston Folk Festival Songwriter’s Contest, the Founders Title Folk and Bluegrass Festival Songwriter's Contest also in 2004, the South Florida Folk Festival Songwriter's Contest in 2005, the 2006 Wildflower Folk Festival Songwriter's Contest, the 2007 New England Songwriting Contest and the 2010 Kerrville New Folk Songwriting Contest.   www.folkmichaeltroy.com

Chuck Williams - BIO
Chuck Williams has been appearing throughout New England and in recent years has gone coast to coast with his music.  He has been traveling to coffeehouses, performing arts centers and festivals sowing seeds of his songs along the way. His lyrics and melodies are a musical journey reflecting emotions of everyday life brought to you through the stories within his songs.

Chuck is a 9 time nominee of the Motif Magazine Music Awards, vice president of R.I.S.A. (Rhode Island Songwriters Association) a member of N.S.A.I. (Nashville Songwriters Association) and A.S.C.A.P.

Matt brings an immediate creative energy to any stage he lands on and he’s racking up a list of notable New England stages to add to his bio. Some day that list is going to be global and longer than a Dylan song, but we hope that the Rick’s Music stage will always feel like Matt’s home. Reserve your seats now for this very special night.

Genres: Folk / Rock / Blues

BIO:
Matt Borrello is a singer-songwriter from Southeastern Massachusetts. For five years Matt has performed regularly in the Boston/Providence area, usually as a solo acoustic act, but also as a sideman for other songwriters and as the leader of his band, the Quality Dogs. Matt's insightful lyrics and passionate performances have earned him recognition in various New England talent showcases and songwriting contests, most notably at the Boston Folk Festival Youth Songwriting Contest.

His songs draw their structures from folk, country, blues and rock music. He is a lover of spontaneous collaborations and his songs have highly malleable arrangements. Matt writes from a personal perspective, but his songs are markedly devoid of boring self-pity. He has several protest songs and no breakup songs. Matt has opened shows for well known local and national musicians such as John Flynn, Rick Fetters, Don White, and Kevin So. He has been a part of shows at venues including Club Passim, the Somerville Armory, Rick's Music World, Steve's Backstage Pass, the Taunton River Folk Festival, the Union Coffeehouse and the Soule Homestead Folk Concert Series.

Steve DiPersio -Open Mic Feature April 26, 2012

Steven James DiPersio has been a singer/songwriter since he began to play the guitar at the age of 10. Growing up in Wilmington, Massachusetts, there wasn’t much to do, so DiPersio found his way into the world of playing in bands.

He was the guitarist and one of the writers for such bands as Shiner, Giulio’s Mama, Old Jonesy and Critycal Mass and has recorded with several other musicians.

DiPersio released a solo album on iTunes called “The Storm” in 2010 and also played lead guitar on both Zak Jacobson and the Pryor Convictions albums, also on iTunes.  Recently, DiPersio has been diving into the Folk realm, and that is the act he will bring to his feature here at Rick’s Music World on Thursday, April 26.
