Teresa Storch -Open Mic Feature 12/1/11 7pm

Funky and soulful folk/rock songs, mesmerizing jazz infused vocals and bounding folk/rock sound...all great descriptions of Teresa's talent...but I have to admit that it was what one of her fans said about her that really intrigued me. He said,
"She could be the love child of Joni Mitchell and Dave Matthews." - Brian Kelly (fan)

Teresa Storch grew up in Omaha, NE and now hails from Colorado where she went to college and first got hooked on the live music scene. It was there that Teresa began writing and performing her own music. She traversed the country in 1999 and landed in the Northeast, where she spent 7 years in the Boston music scene. She's been touring nationally since 2003, covering 35 states in 7 years.

Teresa's in the process of recording her third cd, "The Honesty Kitchen." About her music Teresa says, "My music comes from a desire to connect with others and to keep growing as a human being :)"

And connect she does. She enjoys adventuring into what makes the audience sit up and listen.

Zak Jacobson & Friends-Open Mic Feature 10/20/11

FEATURE DATE:  THURSDAY, OCTOBER 20, 2011
Show Starts at 7pm - (Open Mic performer sign up at 6:30)
Admission $3 per person

Zak Jacobson, along with longtime cohort and lead guitarist Steven DiPersio, is the central songwriter/musician of the studio-based band, Zak Jacobson and the Pryor Convictions.

Zak focuses on songwriting in different genres.   His first album, the self-titled "Zak Jacobson and the Pryor Convictions," was released in June of 2009. The debut record was laced with several styles of music, with songs like "What Side You On," "Stripper," "Half In the Bag," and "Shaking Me Down" highlighting the album. Sometimes controversial in nature, the songs reflect some of the darker themes of life.

Zak Jacobson and the Pryor Convictions' second album, "Purging the Psycho," is due for release in fall, 2011 on iTunes, Amazon, and other websites.

Zak doesn’t consider himself a solo artist, but rather, someone who likes striking up different songs and several projects with various circles of people. He is a self-described “studio rat” but noted playing with a live band is something he misses greatly these days.

“So I just keep playing whenever I can,” he said. “I am always in search for the perfect band.”
When it comes to playing acoustic, Zak likes working with Steven DiPersio and friend Ernie DiMaio, along with other friends from past bands. Zak generally focuses on vocals and guitar but is known to play a few songs on piano as well.

“The style is always Rock,” Zak said. “That’s what it’s about for me all the time. It doesn’t really matter what instrument I’m trying to play. I’ll try to play hardcore punk rock on ukulele if you tell me to.” He added his favorite bands include The Rolling Stones, Pearl Jam, and countless others.

Zak is a regular at Rick’s Music World in Raynham. The staff just cannot get him out of the store.

Liberty Tree Guitar -Special Exhibition 6/23 - 7/12/11

RARE GUITAR MADE FROM WOOD OF THE LAST LIBERTY TREE ON DISPLAY

Flag from the USS Cole Flies over the Liberty Tree Guitar in Raynham
In honor of Independence Day, we are hosting a special exhibition of the “Taylor Liberty Tree Guitar.” This rare instrument was made from the wood of the last surviving Liberty Tree which holds a significant place in American History. Words spoken under this sparked activities that lead to the birth and development of our new nation as Patriots like Samuel Chase gave impassioned speeches and led rebels in singing protest songs.

Each of the original American Colonies had Liberty Trees (or, in some cases, Liberty Poles) under which the Colonists rallied to exchange information and plan tactics for their quest for independence from Great Britain. The budding patriots met under these trees because it gave them a clear view of anyone approaching so they could be wary of spies.

Each tree was highly respected as symbol of Liberty and Democracy. Some were destroyed in an attempt to squash the American Revolution but most continued to act living witnesses to other historical events and ceremonies until one by one they were lost to natural causes, time, disease and storms.

This last surviving Liberty Tree – a lovely tulip popular – towered over the grounds of St. John’s College (originally King William’s School), where it stood sentinel in Annapolis, Maryland for 400 years until it sustained fatal injuries by Hurricane Floyd in 1999.

Bob Taylor of Taylor Guitars, an avid history lover, eagerly sought to purchase the wood from this historical tree as soon as he learned about it. Out of reverence for the historical significance of this wood, the project of bringing it through wood preparation and guitar design took nearly a year. Taylor made 400 limited edition Liberty Tree Guitars, one for every living year of the tree.

The Taylor Liberty Tree Guitar is a stunner. A Grand Concert body with back and sides of chocolate-and-vanilla-colored tulip poplar, with an abalone-edged top of Sitka spruce. A laser-etched, burly maple inlay of a scrolled Declaration of Independence extends from the fingerboard onto the guitar’s top. The rosette combines a crescent of 13 stars (one for each of the original Colonies) around one half of the soundhole, opposite an early battle pennant that flew during the Revolution, rendered in bloodwood and dyed maple. A depiction of the first post-Revolution American flag is inlaid in dyed maple on the peghead.

The Liberty Tree Guitar will be on display in our Raynham Store from Tuesday, June 26th through Tuesday, July 12th. Flying high over the guitar is an American Flag which from the American Naval Destroyer, the USS Cole. This flag was flown on the USS Cole about two years preceding the now infamous bombing attack in Yemen which claimed 17 American lives and wounded 39 more.

Peter, Paul & Mary Tribute Show -June 18

 “Humanity, Hope and Activism”

A Tribute Concert to Peter, Paul and Mary will be hosted at Rick's Music World on Saturday, June 18. Appearing will be Rick Fetters, Andy Daigle and Judy Neveu who will perform the group's historical music filled with the messages of humanity, hope and activism.

During the time of the Civil Rights Movement and the Cold War Peter, Paul and Mary wielded folk's potency as a social, cultural and political force. It was then, back in the early 60's in the hotbed of artistic expression in Greenwich Village that Rick Fetters had the experience of meeting and mingling musically with the group, eventually collaborating with the group and their music. Andy Daigle has been a fan and student of their music. As his musical journey has grown, Andy has come to appreciate the quality of the group's music. Judy Neveu was first introduced to the group's music by listening to her mother's "In the Wind" album. "Stewball" is her favorite. It is the spirit of Peter, Paul and Mary's musical legacy that Rick, Andy and Judy will bring to the concert.

The concert will start at 7pm at Rick's Music World, Rt. 44 in Raynham. Tickets are $12 and are on sale now in store and at http://www.ricksmusiconline.com/ Call 508-977-0200 to reserve a seat for this wonderful Tribute Concert.

Ken Porter & Mike Delaney -Open Mic Feature April 21, 2011

Open Mic Starts at 7
Performer sign-up is at 6:30
Admission $3 per person

This acoustic duo, Ken Porter and Mike Delaney are 40% of the folk ensemble New England Weather (“wait a minute and the music will change”, www.neweather.com).

Ken Porter has been playing drums and singing for over forty years, including most recently in the music group New England Weather. He's played in marching bands, rock-and-roll bands, jazz bands, folk bands. He's opened for Dave Loggins and performed numerous times with Pete Seeger in various venues and with the Walkabout Clearwater Chorus. He's performed with the likes of Tom Chapin, Kim and Reggie Harris, Josh White Jr., and Ruth Wyand. He also appears locally with Julia Kelly, Carolyn Waters, Chris Wilhelm and, prior to her 'big band' era, appeared regularly in the Boston area with Patty Keough. He's provided percussion on several record albums and CDs including Dan Hart's well received "The Life of Dan", David Rovic's "We Just Want The World" and Kathy Danielson’s "Walkin'", on both of Mike Delaney’s CDs and of course on the New England Weather CD.

Mike Delaney is a Boston-area singer-songwriter and part New England Weather. His humorous original songs and parodies cover a wide range of topics from himself ("The Hunk") to the entire country ("If We Only Had a Brain"). In between are excursions into the world of natural science ("Tofu, the Vegan Killer Whale"), literature ("Daddy, Who's Mark Twain?"), automated phone systems ("1-800-CONFESS"), women's health ("Mammogram, M'am?"), sports ("Red Sox Dream"), the oxymoronic business of folk music ("I'm changing my name to DOT.COM"), parts of the human anatomy ("Colonoscopy"), and, of course, his raging ego ("It Is, In Fact, Always About Me"). He has been deemed an "accomplished amateur" by Marilyn Rae Beyer, former music director of WUMB, and Tom Paxton commented that at least one of his songs was "not bad". Anne Hills called the song 1-800-CONFESS "brilliant"! Mike has released three solo CDs, one with New England Weather, and has played mandolin on several others.

″…his guitar creates dense musical shadings, conveying nostalgia, regret, hope and intrigue…” — Jazz Times
Guitar-slinger and Boston Music Award winner Johnny A. grew up listening to Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix before cutting his teeth leading a short string of blues-rock bands. But the Bostonian bluesman really came of age in the early ’90s as a member of J. Geils Band.Everything he learned about supporting a song by knowing when to show off (and, more important, when not to) has been incorporated into his now elegant style: a potent blend of rock, jazz and blues tied together by a sweet tone and a constant emphasis on melody.
During the Clinic, he’ll share the inside story of his style & techniques, answer your questions.. plus plenty of great music to inspire you!

2nd Tyme Around -Open Mic Feature Thurs 3/24/11 @7

Dedicated to Playin' Original Music- written by John Arruda

"..for the PURE REWARD of making it sound as GREAT as it can possibly be!"

Open Mic starts @7pm
Performer Sign up @6:30

Admission:  $3 per person

BAND MEMBERS:
Ed Fonseca- lead vocals & percussion,
John Arruda- lead guitar, vocals, songwriter
Alan Belong -2nd guitar and vocals
Roy Vieira -drummer and vocals
Ray Letourneau- bass guitar and vocals

2nd Tyme Around is the brainchild of Ed Fonseca, who wanted to put together a band featuring the original music of his cousin, John Arruda. Finding musicians who would be willing to sacrifice playing cover tunes to dedicate themselves to learning original material was not easy. The financial rewards would be very small, not to mention the time commitment for rehearsing and learning the material.

The band has gone through several transformations: a drummer, three bass players, two keyboard players and a percussionist have come and gone, but the 5 remaining players have proven to be the nucleus of the band.

In the words of John Arruda, who writes all the original material for the Band, “The driving force seems to be everyone's dedication to the music, which is diverse; from country rock, to rhythm & blues, latin flavored, good old rock n' roll, Americana...I guess that covers it all. It is hard sometimes to say with words, what you feel in your heart. I try to do that with my song lyrics, which I find the perfect vehicle to deliver my inner most thoughts and feelings.”

If the band is destined to be successful, John says it will be because of everyone's dedication and desire for the music to sound as good as it can get. Says, John, “I guess it all depends upon your definition of success. Just playing and enjoying the music has been reward enough for me. I have been truly blessed to be surrounded by good musicians, but more importantly good friends. I'd say we've been very successful.”

SUNDAY - MARCH 13, 2011
TIME:  6:30 - 10:00

Our teacher, Jim Johnson, has led a life filled with music and has shared his joy of music making with so many people.  Just ask his many band mates, family and friends over the years plus the thousands of people who've watched him perform.  He's shared it with us here at Rick's for over 10 years and most importantly ... passed it on to the many students who've had the good fortune to be taken under his gentle wing and shown the possibilities that music brings.  A legacy that will live on through them.

Sadly, on January 14, Jim lost his battle with cancer.  Please join us to celebrate his life and the music he loved so much.

All proceeds will be going to help Jim's family.

MORE About Jim's musical and theatrical journey:

A Taunton native, Jim was the lead singer of such bands as Rockestra, Snapdragon, Kindred Spirit, Full Moon Fever and many more!  On the stage, Jim lived each moment to the fullest and gave every ounce of his gifted talent, energy and spirit to the performance.  He also portrayed Jesus in the rock musical, Jesus Christ Superstar for ten years.  Many have said that as you watched Jim perform the role, you came to believe it was Jesus you were watching, so complete was his creative commitment to the purity of his role.

As a solo artist, he was often known as "Jim Jonson:  The Wandering Minstrel"  and while living in Florida, many called him "JJ On The Beach."

We recall one special memory of Jim's musical journey that happened right here at Rick's.  Jim loved no, make that LOVED The Beatles!  After George Harrison's death, Jim wrote a song about George, his favorite Beatle.  In 2006, we co-sponsored a weekend of events with the Beatles tribute band, The Liverpool Legends, a band put together by George's sister, Louise Harrison.  And on the Friday night before the big Sat night concert, we held a private event for a small group of people to meet the band members and Louise and play Beatles songs together.  It was a magical night.

When Jim took the stage, he sang George's song for all of us, but mostly, for Louise who came onstage to thank Jim and give him a big hug.  Later on she gave Jim her contact information chatted with him and invited him to stay in touch.  He talked about that night as being one of the most memorable of his life.

City of Squares -Open Mic Feature on Thurs - Feb 17 2011

We are in for some dynamic musicianship on Thursday, Feb 17th, when City of Squares will be our featured act at Open Mic.  Except for Jenna, every member of the band either teaches or has taught at Rick's and all are Quality musicians with a capital "Q".  Just sayin'...we'd love to add Jenna, too, if she could squeeze us into her schedule, which is pretty unlikely.

Genre:  Rock, Pop, Alternative

Members:
Jenna Paone......Lead Vocals/Piano
John Baptista.....Guitar/Vocals
Bill Ferri............Bass/Backing Vocals
Jon Francis........Drums/Backing Vocals

The music of piano-based rock quartet City of Squares (formerly The Briar Rose) combines the ferocity of powerhouses such as Bruce Springsteen and Michael Jackson with the sophisticated sensibility of poets like Sarah McLachlan and Damien Rice. Built upon a crooked tower of blues and soul, their distinctive brand of modern rock comes complete with edgy riffs, sultry undertones, danceable grooves, and attitude to spare.  For music samples and more about City of Squares go to:

A story of outstanding service from TreeWorks -chimes made in USA

Rick's Music World recommends TreeWorks products...because their chimes are made in USA (Nashville) and they stand behind their products!

The coolest thing just happened to us that proved it!

Here's what happened:
One of our customers had a little whoopsie and the TreeWorks chimes came crashing to the floor. Two chimes broke off. We called TreeWorks to see if we could get the right parts to repair it. Instead, they volunteered to send us brand new set of chimes and pick up the damaged one free of charge. That is uncommonly outstanding service! We're proud to be a TreeWorks dealer. Check out their great chimes at http://www.treeworkschimes.com/
