New Year's Thoughts

(We'll be closed New Year's Day)

We're so lucky to be in the business of music.  To see first-hand the power it has to transform our spirit by giving someone an energetic boost at just the right time, by inspiring a contemplative moment or resurrecting a special memory and by providing a much needed peaceful escape from our hectic lives.

At Open Mic we see it bring all kinds of people together, whether its to appreciate a shared song, recognize a person's effort or absorb the encouragement of others so freely given.   We see the many brand new friendships bonded here.  We see the challenges and laughter exchanged at each impromptu collaboration.  The vibe at Open Mic seems to bring out the best in everyone.  It's like music therapy.  Actually a few people have told us that.  If we could duplicate our Open Mic around the world, I'm pretty sure the world would be a safer and happier place.

At recitals we see a student's hard work and butterflies turn into a boost of self-esteem for their accomplishment.  We see the support in a parent's hopeful gaze as their child takes the stage evolve into joyful pride and maybe the realization that their child is one of the lucky ones.  Not all families can afford music lessons.  Some make significant personal sacrifices so their child can.  Others donate to our scholarship fund so they can make a difference for someone else's child.  They are making a difference.  Four scholarships were given out this year.

If you know of a child that wants to learn an instrument whose family cannot afford lessons, let them know we have a scholarship program and we do have scholarships available.  With your help we can make a difference in their lives through music.

From Rick and I and all of us here at Rick's Music, we hope you have a wonderful New Year, full of memorable moments and new discoveries. We hope it's a good one!
Robin

ABOUT OUR FEATURE:

GRACE MORRISON and The RSO

Grace Morrison is one of our extremely talented and beloved teachers here at Rick's, teaching Voice, Piano and Guitar. Her vocals are absolutely stunning, her song compositions creatively unexpected.

Put Grace on a stage and her absolute love of performance radiates from every pore. Especially when she plays with the caliber of musicianship in her Band, The RSO, comprised of Grace's longtime guitarist Ben Moniz, Marta Rymer on violin and vocals and Max Judelson on upright bass.

MORE ABOUT GRACE:
Her talents and abilities are difficult to describe because they are so extraordinary. Grace Morrison is a singer/songwriter/pianist/guitarist who has been compared to many, but best described as one who turns words into pictures.
With a style spanning roots rock to folk and back to rock and blues, Grace’s music transcends her youth to arrive at a plane typically reserved for ‘old souls’. Her lyrics are poignant, her melodies infinitely memorable, and her performance and presence are commanding.     Visit gracemorrison.com

Phil Ochs Song Night Performer -Short Bios

This outstanding line up of consummate musicians & storytellers will pay homage to the music of Phil Ochs, plus share their original music with us on Sunday, October 24, 2010. Hosted by Sonny Ochs Get concert details at:  http://ricksmusic.blogspot.com/2010/09/phil-ochs-song-night-oct-24-2010.html

John Flynn http://www.johnflynn.net/
John Flynn sings powerful songs of humanity and hope deeply rooted in the traditions of Woody Guthrie and Phil Ochs. John paints vivid, lasting images with words and music, drawn from a palette of awareness, compassion, irony, and humor.
A socially driven singer/songwriter not afraid of writing about the shadows, John allows us the space to come to our own conclusions. His songs speak to our common shared humanity. Thank-you notes left on his websites come from both soldiers and anti-war advocates.

Greg Greenway http://www.greggreenway.com/
Beneath the radar of the corporate music world there are gems to be found. Greg Greenway is a multi-faceted one. A rare combination of instrumental expertise, a soulful and moving singer, powerful poet, and sparkling entertainer, Greenway is one of those difficult-to-categorize performers who have found a home in the modern acoustic genre.

Musically, he draws inspiration from all over the map--gospel, rock, blues, Jazz, and world music. But his center is in the singer/songwriter tradition that traces it roots all the way back to the social awareness of Woody Guthrie. His central appeal is that it all comes through the singular lens of Greenway's humanity and his easy affinity for the audience.
Magpie  http://www.magpiemusic.com/
Terry Leonino and Greg Artzner began to play music together in Kent, Ohio in September of 1973.

Greg began to play music in the early sixties as a direct result of the Civil Rights Movement. His father worked for the National Urban League, and members of the family became involved in local action in the Movement. Terry also began singing at that time, and spent many of her childhood summers with her mother's family in the deep south where she witnessed the cruelty of racism and the power of the Movement.

She also was a witness to the shootings at Kent State on May 4th, 1970 when National Guard troops fired into a group of students protesting the war in Vietnam. Terry and Greg continue to reflect these experiences in their own work as they frequently raise their voices in support of the ongoing struggles for civil rights, freedom, justice, and peace.

The powerful blending of their impressive voices are a treat for the ear. Add to that their instrumental talents, Terry on harmonica, mandolin, fretted dulcimer and rhythm guitar, and Greg is an outstanding fingerstyle guitarist. His playing is the solid basis of Magpie's sound, providing whatever is called for, whether it be a hard-driving rhythm, or a ringing lyrical beauty.

Kim & Reggie Harris  http://www.kimandreggie.com/
Consummate musicians and storytellers, Kim and Reggie Harris combine a strong folk and gospel legacy with a solid background in classical, rock, jazz and pop music. They write, record and produce music as a means to promote creativity, education, social responsibility and understanding in the world community.

As a result of their CDs "Steal Away" and Get On Board" (Appleseed Recordings) and materials developed in their work with the Kennedy Center, Kim and Reggie have earned wide acclaimed for their contributions to the resources and knowledge base - in historical and educational circles - on the Underground Railroad and the modern civil rights movement.

Creative curiosity, years of road and stage experience and interactions with performers such as Pete Seeger, Ysaye Barnwell, Jay Leno, Tom Paxton, Bernice Johnson Reagon, Harry Belafonte and others, has led them to produce music that entertains and inspires.

David Roth  http://www.davidrothmusic.com/
David Roth strikes many chords, hearts and minds with his unique songs, offbeat observations, moving stories, sense of the hilarious and powerful singing and subject matter. Not many songwriters can say their music took a trip on the Space Shuttle. But David can.

His song, "Rocket Science" went up on the Space Shuttle Atlantis's May 2009 mission to repair the Hubble Telescope. While others have found their way to Carnegie Hall, the United Nations, several Chicken Soup for the Soul books, the Kennedy Center, Peter, Paul, & Mary concerts, NASA’s Goddard Space Center.

Pat Wictor  http://www.patwictor.com/
Steeped in American "roots" music, Pat Wictor is a contemporary songwriter and interpreter drawing on the rural country, gospel, and blues traditions of our nation.

"Pat Wictor is a phenomenal lap-slide guitarist and songwriter as well as an interpreter of others' music. His lyrics are intelligent and compelling, his stage presence commanding." -Mike Space, Artistic Director, Godfrey Daniels, Bethlehem, PA

An American by birth, Pat was raised outside of the United States until his teenage years, living in Venezuela, Holland, Norway, and England. This time abroad gave him an unusually deep awareness of being a resident of a country while also a world citizen.

Pat views his life and his music as a journey, populated with an ever-shifting landscape of people, places and emotions. It is a journey he is eager to share with others, knowing that it is the experiences along the way, not the arrival, that initiate the most profound changes.

Andy and Judy (Acoustic Duo)-Open Mic Feature 10-21-10

OUR OCTOBER OPEN MIC FEATURE!

Andy and Judy: An acoustic duo playing guitar, piano and harmonica

Andy Daigle and Judy Neveu live in Bridgewater and have been singing together for about a year and a half. It’s a duo built upon common ground. Each draw from a wealth of experience they received while singing with various choruses and choirs throughout their lives.

Their performances are highlighted by the quality of their vocal work, each individually and joined together with beautiful harmonies. They perform songs from Tricia Yearwood, John Denver, John Prine, James Taylor, Peter Paul and Mary, Simon and Garfunkle and many other folk and country artists.

Both New England natives, Judy is originally from Taunton where she was introduced to folk music at an early age through her mom’s Neil Diamond and Peter, Paul and Mary records. Andy was born in Maine into a musical family. He spent most of his youth in upstate New York where he grew up listening to folk and church music while traveling with his family before eventually settling in Malden.
Interestingly enough, Judy is related to Fred Pike, the man credited with bringing Bluegrass to the state of Maine. Although Judy prefers listening to 80’s rock bands, she hasn’t quite convinced Andy to adapt some of those songs into their repertoire.

They’ve promised all new material for their feature this Thursday, save for one very special song. We’ll have to wait and see what surprise might be in store.  Open Mic starts at 7pm, Performer signup is at 6:30. $3 admission.

About Phil Ochs

Phillip David Ochs
(December 19, 1940 – April 9, 1976) was an American protest singer (or, as he preferred, a topical singer) and songwriter who was known for his sharp wit, sardonic humor, earnest humanism, political activism, insightful and alliterative lyrics and haunting voice.

Most of Phil Ochs' music touches on some of the most difficult issues, raising important social and political questions, his music heard at anti-Vietnam War and civil rights rallies, student events and organized labor events.

A contributor to the booming Greenwich Village folk music scene, in 1964, Phil released his first record and, within two years had enough success to play to a sold out crowd at Carnegie Hall. He wrote over a hundred songs mostly in the 1960s and released eight albums in his lifetime.

He travelled the world, but while in Tanzania, he was mugged and lost the top three notes of his vocal range. This event seemed to send him on a downward spiral. His last years were troubled ones. He suffered from manic depression plus an affinity for the bottle. Sadly, he took his live on April 9, 1976 at the age of 35.

IN TRIBUTE

Thatcher Harrison -Open Mic Feature Sept. 30, 2010

DATE:     September 30, 2010
SHOW TIME:  7 pm  (Performer sign up is at 6:30)
Admission:   $3 per person

About Thatcher:

Thatcher Harrison was born to play guitar. He began playing before the age of two, started making weekly public performances at the age of five, and had his first open-mic feature performance shortly before turning six. That was about his age the first time he first performed on our stage with his Dad, Stan, while exhibiting an early love for performance.  He's been a very busy boy since then and we're looking forward to seeing what he's got in store for us.
Drawn to the music of the 1960s and 1970s, Thatcher delights audiences with songs by such artists as Simon and Garfunkel, the Beatles, Cat Stevens, Donovan, and James Taylor. A regular performer on the open-mic circuit, Thatcher has had feature performances at the Café Arpeggio (New Bedford), the Coffee Deport (Warren), the Planet Café (Westport), and the Custom House Coffee (Portsmouth). In each of the past four years, Thatcher had entertained audiences at Rhode Island's "Singing Out Against Hunger" benefit and the Tiverton Arts and Artisan festival. This past summer, he had the pleasure of playing at the Marshfield Fair, at a one-day music festival in Alpena, Michigan, and before a capacity crowd at Mahogany Shoals on Block Island. And, today, we hear he’s excited at the prospect of playing and singing on stage at Rick’s Music World as our September feature.  Help us welcome him back!

Roy Tabua -Open Mic Feature 8/26/2010

Diversity is one of the most delicous pleasures of our Open Mic, where you might hear music performed in any number of languages and styles. This month’s Feature Performer, Roy Tabua, offers a warm and silky-smooth blend of music inspired from the world music influences he loves…African, South American, American and European music.

This Thursday night, you’ll hear him sing in a variety of languages, but I have to say that his bossa nova, softly sung in Brazillian Portugese is so smooth, it will melt in your mouth. Roy’s intriguing finger-style guitar accompanyment adds a latin warmth to his performance. He’s sure to soothe your soul.

Born in Nova Lisboa, Angola to Cape Verdian parents, Roy spent his youth in Portugal before moving to the US as a teenager. Roy began learning guitar at the age of 14 and continues to pursue a higher level of understanding of the guitar, song arranging and composition at the New England Conservatory of Music.

You’ll find his first studio recording of his original arrangment at http://www.myspace.com/roytabua

Don Wilson - Open Mic Feature June 10, 2010

Open Mic starts at 7pm and performer sign up is at 6:30.
Admission $3 per person

In my 27 years of owning a music store, I’ve seen quite a few great musicians develop from a tender young age. This month’s Open Mic Feature was one of those kids who blossomed into a killer vocalist, highly skilled guitarist radiating warm charisma as a live performer. He absolutely blew me away as the lead in a local theatre production of Jesus Christ Superstar!

Donnie & I became friends many years ago and I was delighted when he told me that he was ready to get back into music. Now 40 years old, he is making his first return to writing, recording, and performing in over 13 years.

Wilson performed at clubs and colleges throughout New England in the 90's, highlighted by a live performance with Jimmy Buffett and the release of his full length CD titled, "Lather, Rinse, Repeat" in 1997. He left music to pursue a successful career in the mortgage industry which led to founding Province Mortgage Associates, Inc with his peers in 2005. According to Donnie, ten great years of marriage and three wonderful children later, the timing was finally right to pick up the acoustic guitar and stretch out the vocal chords again. Wilson's goal was to release a new album in 2010, the year of his 40th birthday, and to get up in front of a crowd again. Thanks to the fantastic people at our Open Mic, support was right around the corner.

Wilson's vocal style has been compared to the late Brad Delp from the band BOSTON, as he loves to still scream the high stuff while still being able to bring it down to a soulful whisper. All of his music is written on the acoustic guitar which he openly admits he truly enjoys taking chances and being aggressive. Let's just say there's a lot of scratches and dents on his Washburn acoustic. His new music is being recorded with Alex Krepkikh, a tremendous talent from Providence, RI, and is being released in August 2010. Wilson's mission with his music is now defined by the birth of his son Jacob in 2009 who was born with CHD (Congenital Heart Defect). This inspired Donnie to write the single, "Super Hero Fantasy" that is being acclaimed by many as the anthem for CHD awareness, especially in the world of heart families. All proceeds from the sale of this single go to research for CHD through Children's Hospital Boston.

This Thursday night, you are in for a treat. With Donnie in the Feature Spotlight, you will be entertained to your heart’s content!

~Rick
