Sweet Babylon -10/25/12 Open Mic Feature

Our next Feature puts the ssss-punk in October!  Sweet Babylon is a ska / reggae / punk rock band so well received by our Open Mic crowd that we wanted to hear more of them.

The Group was formed in late 2011 by three friends from the Fall River, Mass area looking to bring back the ska and reggae sound from their generation (which was the 90's) to the new generation of Justin Beiber fans. "I can only compare us as a Blink-182 / Sublime .. love child,” says Kyle Platt, lead singer of the Group.

Sweet Babylon has  written tons of original music and also cover a lot of great music from many artists like Sublime to Kid Cudi.

Kyle Platt is the lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist of the group, with his smooth singing and wise cracking jokes he makes sure that every song turns into a party! Next on the roster is Izzy Star! He is the bassist and background vocalist in the group. With his shag-a-delic bass grooves and great harmonies he is capable of making any person shake their "toocus." Last, but definitely not least, is Brandon Carreiro on drums. His beats are able to fill up any music lover’s stomach. (Yes, that was beat reference to food...) All together they form the perfect little girl known as "Sweet Babylon!”

Peter Zurblis -Open Mic Feature 9/20/12

Peter Zurblis grew up immersed in the folk and rock music of the sixties and seventies and beyond. He has developed a passion for guitar and vocal interpretations of this deep pool of influence. Peter’s inspirations include, but are not limited to, Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Neil Young, The Band, and John Prine along with contemporaries like Mark Errelli, Laurie McKenna, and Richard Shindell.

Self taught on the guitar, Peter focuses primarily on folk and some rock music. He uses his voice and the harmonica for accompaniment. Peter has attended WUMB’s Summer Acoustic Music Week in New Hampshire which has allowed him to play with some of the nation’s best musicians.

Peter loves playing ‘around the campfire’, at gigs, for friends and family, house parties, and open mikes, especially the Rick’s Music World family. His main goal though is to just have fun and bring enjoyment to his audiences.

Our Thursday night Open Mic held in our Cafe is our most important community service effort, providing a casual, family-friendly performance venue for the members of our musical community of students, customers and visiting local/regional/national/international performers from beginners, and semi-pro to pro. The Prairie Dogs -Open Mic Feature Aug 16

On August 16th-- Open Mic Features:  The Prairie Dogs

The Prairie Dogs are a combination of sounds of older country music and a slight touch of 50's and 60's. They love to sit around and play good old country music, and have discovered that crowds of all ages enjoy listening to them.

Al brings a simple clean style of playing. Ernie brings rhythm and good harmony. And Roger brings his own unique style of playing to make a great mix. They have played a number of open mics in the area, but always make their way back to Rick’s, where the crowd always gives them a great welcome. This is their first time as a feature, but they will give it their all.

Friends Joe on bass and Bill on drums will give the “The Dogs” a well-rounded sound. They may even have a mystery guest do an old country favorite.

Come on down and give them a listen. The Cafe will be open with great food, and all the other players and singers will be in great form.

The Prairie Dogs..Al Pittsley, Roger Rebeiro and Ernie Breau

Celebrating 7 years of Open Mic!

 Rick's Open Mic

July 20, 2005 - July 19, 2012

Open Mic Night at Rick's is your chance to shine and it's our commitment to serve our community.

What began as an effort to offer a safe and welcoming place to play for our students and customers has evolved into so much more as word spread of the great vibe at Rick's Open Mic, drawing performers from all over!

Every Thursday night the lights go down in the Cafe at Rick's Music World and the Stage lights come on, spotlighting local, regional and occasionally national and international talent. Talent abounds! But it's not just the talent that has made ours one of the most popular Open Mic's in the region.

It's the generousity of spirit from the Open Mic Community at each event...the audience and performers who in turn appreciate and support each other, and those who have so generously volunteered their time and energy to produce the events.  Like Tom Irving who tirelessly helps host, co-host, stage set up, Cafe sets up/breaks down...you name it, Tom's done it!!   Chris Zarlenga who stays long after his work day is over to help out, break down, take out trash...whatever is needed.  Jaimee Brown (and in the past many others!) who volunteers in our Cafe plus Steve DiPersio, Andy Daigle and Rick Fetters who've filled in on the sound board and Zak Jacobson who pitch hits whenever he's needed.  And the many people who help clean up and break down at the end of the night, like our friend John Spalding who we all miss so much.

In the same spirit, Rick and Robin donate all their time and energy to the cause. The $3 Admission is used to support the Open Mic Program and help fund the Rick's Music Scholarship Fund, which provides financial assistance to families for music lessons.  Their commitment to serve our community is well known.
Creativity breeds among creative people in such an environment.  The Rick's Stage has given birth to many original songs, and many a songwriter and musician has inspired others or began a collaborative evolution at Rick's on a Thursday night!

We're so lucky to be in the business of music. To see first-hand the power it has to transform our spirit by giving someone an energetic boost at just the right time, by inspiring a contemplative moment or resurrecting a special memory and by providing a much needed peaceful escape from our hectic lives.

At Open Mic we see it bring all kinds of people together, whether its to appreciate a shared song, recognize a person's effort or absorb the encouragement of others so freely given. We see the many brand new friendships bonded here. We see the challenges and laughter exchanged at each impromptu collaboration. The vibe at Open Mic seems to bring out the best in everyone. It's like music therapy. Actually a few people have told us that. If we could duplicate our Open Mic around the world, We're pretty sure the world would be a safer and happier place.

Here's to another 7 years!!
